We are thrilled to feature artist Zena Carves! Zena is a Tucson-based visual artist whose emotive and striking work invokes nostalgia in striking silhouettes and retro imagery.
Where are you from?
Originally from Bisbee, AZ
What got you started making art?
I’ve always been drawn to creating some sort of parallel reality or imaginary world to escape into.
What’s your artistic background? (experience, education, etc.)
I hold a BFA in Art and Visual Culture Education from the University of Arizona. I started Zena Carves last March.
Who or what are your biggest artists’ influences?
Dian Arbus, John Waters, Dadaism, and Barbie.
Where do you get your inspiration for your art?
Lately it’s been mostly pop culture icons and retro/vintage imagery.
What brought you to BICAS?
I have been aware of BICAS for years and recently I have been lucky enough to participate in the Art Mart After Dark.
How has BICAS affected you?
I love what BICAS does for the community.
Why did you work with BICAS at the Art Auction?
The opportunity arose and I jumped on it.
